Too many fertile eggs!!
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:05 »
Hi, Is it possible to MAKE a hen sit on a clutch of eggs?? I have been given 12 fertile eggs, my incubator only holds 6 and i dont want to discard the rest, is it possible to make one of my 2 Pekin hens sit on the remaining 6 eggs, neiter of the hens is laying at the moment. Any advice would be greatfully recieved.

I think this comes under the heading of Sods Law. If you have a broodie you don't want her to be and if you have eggs that need a broodie no one will sit. I have always used broodies and have never tried or heard of trying to make them broodie. I'm fairly sure it's all hormones and instinct I'm afraid.

if you have a silkie or silkie cross they will often become broody if you leave a couple of eggs in their coop but as for other breeds then it's not always this easy.
Staffies are softer than you think.
