Hi this may seem a silly question but how soon after putting the cockerel in with the girls should I expect fertile eggs?

Within 3 or 4 days :)  Remember that a hen has a chain of eggs "in production", and only the eggs which have not yet left are able to be fertilized.

Fertility can continue for upto one month after the cockerel is taken away!
