I plan to have one in the garden, eventually, and have looked on the web for various sizes and methods. On the basis I just want it so that I can drink wine, on the pretence of playing a sport, and not host the next Olympique Francais Boules thingy, can anyone let me have an idea of a playable width, I've got about 10m length.

See http://www.petanque.org/building/238.shtml

I think sizing is pretty relaxed.  After all, they just play it on car parks and any bit of bare ground in France.

Yes, I've already seen that site, 15m is a bit excessive, as is 4m wide, and I played on a firends that was too short and narrow, so I just wondered if anyone had one that gave ample room for "tactics" but wasn't OTT.

Perhaps I should just go and throw some boules about in the mud and see where my footprints take me.

If you went for 10m x 2.5m at least you'd be keeping the aspect ratio the same.  Not that it is crucial. 8 to 10m x 1.5m would still be good fun.

Hi. The ones we have down by the local plan d'eau are around 2m x 10m. The idea is to throw straight in front of you, rather than to the sides. The lateral area's really just to ensure there's enough room for a 'rogue' bounce to keep the boule in play, that's all.  HTH.

Cheers,

Stu.

Thanks Le chant, the piste is also going to double up as a garden divider between lawn and veg, so it will hopefully be piste/path, with a low hedge or maybe lavender to attract the pollinating insects.  Will aim for a minimum 2m width.

Tactically I quite like the off centre throws on wider pistes, but I must keep reminding myself it's for pleasure, not competition.
