potato setanta anyone?
« on: January 20, 2014, 12:29 »
Dear Thompson and Morgan   ::)  I ordered Yukon gold and they sent me Setanta. Has anyone grown this variety at all? I am pushed for space so it needs to be worthy!

I will also be growing LadyC, Pink fir apple and Sarpo mira.

Nope - but suggest you research it, and email TM as to why they sent you a variety you didn't order.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I was give 3 tubers to grow last year, they did ok but not a lot of difference from S Mira.

I grew setanta and S Mira in same row only difference slightly better flavour of Setanta.

T+ Morgan still have Yukon Gold for sale on Website so you could try to exchange them

We picked up some Setanta from Potato Day at Hulme Community Garden Centre (along with a few other varieties). They cropped OK but have proved a lot more attractive to slugs than Kestrel, the one we plant most of. Lots of black bits to cut off/dig out...

They are the driest potato we have ever come across! They fall to pieces if boiled, and need lots of butter if baked. Wedges the other night weren't much better...

won't be planting again

Thanks everyone. It doesn’t sound as if they should be using precious space. I have emailed T&M.

I have grown setanta and while not top of the list they did make very acceptable roast potatoes.

I grew them last year - decent crop and only dug the last ones last week with minimal slug damage. Quite scabby but I've got dry, chalky soil. They make great roast spuds and apparently have good blight resistance, so for those reasons I'm giving them another go this year.

Setanta is an excellent potato if you like floury potatoes, with good blight resistance and a good flavour. I never boil potatoes. Microwave for best flavour and texture.

Grew setanta last year, and they have stored very well indeed. They make decent roasties and mash, and whilst not the strongest flavour in the world, they are not horrible at all.

Didn't notice any particular slug damage
