Using grow lamps?
« on: January 17, 2014, 21:32 »
I used to raise my chilli seedlings in my spare room which had a lovely south facing sunny window ledge. I no longer have the use of that room any more but have another room which has a window ledge but doesn't see as much sun. Has anyone used grow lamps to give the plants the best of starts, especially led variants.

Grow lamps are very useful if your area hasn't much light. It's actually better because plants will get the full colour spectrum which will make them healthier. You'll need to put the lights on chains so you can keep raising them as the plants grow, otherwise they can still go leggy like window plants.

I had a grow light garden for my birthday a few years ago but it takes up so much space that I didn't use it last year and just used the windowsills instead.

You can always use a biggish box with a side cut out and the back covered in tinfoil which will reflect any light from the window back onto the rear of the seedlings.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I use one in my greenhouse so that the tender plants don't go too leggy. Anything hardy can be placed out in greenhouse / cold frame/ tunnel without heat and can slowly mature, but the tender ones need constant heat and would therefore need light, (for compact plants in May ready to grow on successfully once the frosts have passed.)
I found grow lights very successful, but they need to be quite close to the crops. you can't just hang one in the top of the greenhouse and expect it to do the whole lot.
