If you want nice brown eggs, then go for the Welsummers. Most of the others are 'fancy' breeds that wont lay many eggs for you. Even the Welsummers wont lay anywhere near as many eggs as a commercial hybrid will.

If you want them primrily for laying eggs, go for a hybrid.  The most popular amongst the commercial breeders at the moment is the Bovans Goldline which is brown with cream tail and wing tips, like I've just bought.  They are supposed to lay about 320 eggs a year in their peak period.

Another new comer is the Amberlink which is a recent arrival from Holland and they are supposed to lay 350 eggs a year.  They are white with touches of colour.  Not actually brown, but just shaded.  Chickychick and myself have just purchased both of these and they are lovely chooks to look at too, but as hybrids they won't live as long as pure breeds, but are cheaper to buy and lay more eggs.

Whereabouts are you Atomania?

i get 230 -270 days a year i guess to be honest it never worries me how many i get .if you have enough birds you get enough eggs .how many eggs can you use a week is the deciding point in having chucks i think.. ok i sold my eggs as well but now i only have a few birds for the kitchen
