What to plant?
« on: November 06, 2007, 21:19 »
Hi all, I am very new to this so please bear with me because I might ask some very silly questions. I am desperate to plant something, can anybody tell me what to plant now, just so I can make a start and feel like I am actually growing something. I was thinking of planting some J. Artichoke tubers but have not got a clue as to whether this is the right time. Thanks in advance everybody.

Cheers WG, if I plant the JA tubers when can I harvest them? Also what types of garlic are the best? what do you think of these all year  caulis and cabbage seeds you can buy, do they need to be in a greenhouse?

Harvest your JA in 12 months time - okay maybe 11.

Don't plant cauli / cabbage before, say March & even then under glass.

I think, it's too late now, but not to despere, when I don't get round to it in time, I sow some in Jan-Feb time, (growth rate will be slow at given light conditions, do not worry) a window sill in a cool room, like utility or green house will do. And harden off, depending what the weather throws at you in March some time, very early lettuce to be had. :)

There are no silly questions, but on this forum there are some very silly answers.  Fortunately, amongst those are some very useful ones.

if you have not got any - or haven't started anything off yet - why not try some herbs in pots inside on your windowsill - you could grow winter salad leaves aswell - especially rocket - that stuff grows anywhere - so start some off indoors and when plants are big enough - stick outdoors under cloches

broad beans - still time for sowing them.  I can't remember which variety but as I was checking out the sowing deadlines, you could sow them anytime between now and February :D   I sowed 2 batches, one for outside and the other will be kept in the (unheated) greenhouse and planted out in early spring just in case we get a really bad winter.

How can a one year old do a garden :?:

Well, tradition says, shortest day for your onions and shallots, most people(includes meself) nowadays tend to plant them quite a bit later, Feb-March, sort of time.
