Recently having a first lot of red mite myself,
~I tried pressure washer - did not help just left hundreds of gross mite crawling around the garden,
~painting the inside of the coop - helped a little as it filled in all the cracks but did not kill them just made it harder for the mites to hide,
~and diatomaceaous earth slurry - worked an absolute treat!

This is all the helpful stuff people suggested to me:

My girls house was hit by red mite in April this year.  We used Poultry Shield and it has worked a treat.  Numerous more sprays have been given but we seem to have been red mite free for some months now so I'd really recommend it.

Make sure you spray everywhere inside the chicken house and nest box, it leave it for an hour or so then scrub or power jet it all down and leave to dry.  If time is getting on use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time.   Remove the perches and give them a good scrub too as we found the red mite got between the perch and the short bit of wood underneath it.  Also spray well into the tongue and grove or joins in the wooden house inside and outside.  We found one length of tongue and grove was a veritable breeding ground.

Good luck!
