Plastic bottles for Demi johns
« on: September 20, 2009, 16:40 »
Not sure if this question has been asked before as Im new to this topic.

I am about to make some sloe gin and have  always normally used a glass demi john, but a friend of my fathers has advised him to use plastic pop bottles which believe would not be very successful. Would this work or would it give poor results. Cheers.

Don't think it will make any difference. I always use glass containers but can't think of a reason there would be a problem with plastic.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

When I make my fruit vodkas I use a (well washed) 4 pint plastic milk container. They have a wide(ish) neck so it's fairly easy to get the fruit in, and happily contain enough fruit + 1 litre of vodka, and enough room to swish it around from time to time.
So far, after about half dozen different vodkas and white rums, I've had no problems.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

I'd be a bit worried that the alcohol could dissolve certain elements of the plastic. You don't often see alcoholic drinks sold in plastic bottles.

I recently brewed some cider using one of those quick brew kits you get in local supermarkets, i just used a plastic bucket to do this and it worked fine i suppose it depends on the type of plastic really but pop ones should be fine, i think....
