pallet shed fixings . . . . .
« on: January 18, 2008, 22:58 »
well i've picked up another 14 pallets tonight, think that brings my total to about erm  . . . . .  30 summat at the last count  :D (with the opportunity to get lots more! )

near half are the type where there are no gaps between the planks so they're gonna get used for the sides, the gapped pallets will be used for the floor and then covered with some laminate flooring i've got knocking about.

i want the shed to be about 12 foot long by 10 wide and say 8 high at the apex.

so the 'construction' will start like this, gapped pallets will make the base, ungapped pallets will form the sides. now i know that once the first row of pallets is attached they will be secure and if the base pallets are all joined together they will have weight which will give me a rigid frame to work with.

so what do you think is the best method of attaching the second row??? i was thinking  of strapping them together with planks from broken down pallets, on the inside, or, building a frame, shed shaped, but that  involves laying out for timber when the idea is to construct from recycled pallets. not sure my strapping idea will be strong enough???

all the articles i've seen on pallet sheds dont really give you much insight into how they actually attached them together to get the desired height and of course i dont want to go to all the trouble of making a base and the sides to find it collapses with the weight of the roof lol

anyone got any pearls of wisdom for me  . . . . . . . .

can you have 4 bits of timber - 1 at each corner - as upright posts sort of thing - that would act as in fillers for the corners - and if fixed to the floor - could you not have a rail from post to post (that would be inside the shed ) to give you a secure fixing for you pallets?

kind of like an internal frame ? that was what crossed my mind too, dont think that would outta place either way  . . . . .  its the join between the rows i want to make sure is strong enough too, but i would figure the uprights would sort that out  :D

thats the best thing about the way pallets are made ! 1 piece of wood and you've built a shelf lol  ( so long as they're pointing the right way lol)

then try your local fabricators - a friend of mine works at a big unit - which does huge structures that are quite technical - the wasteage they get, from off cuts and rejects are incredible - and they can't re-use it - so it gets skipped
