Slow chicken
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:28 »
One of my 4 hens has slowed down markedly about 2 months ago. She is the picture of good health but now lags behind the others when scratching about for food and is a little withdrawn from the others. She finds climbing down ramps/steps a little taxing and is last to leave the coop in the morning. I once thought I detected a very slight limp but that could have been my imagination. I believe she is also responsible for the thin- shelled eggs being laid.( There is plenty of grit available)
There is nothing visibly wrong and has a good turn of speed when trying to grab her.
Anyone come across anything similar and if so, what caused it?

We have had similar behaviour from our ex batts when they were coming to the end, however as I said they were ex batts. Some more experienced member will be along to give you some more practical suggestions.  Good Luck

Try her on some 'Nutri drops'. Cant remember who makes it but perks them up in about half an hour. It may be just the end of her days though I'm affraid.

(Sorry for my english, i'm french)

How old is this hen ?

It may simply be worms in his intestines...do you used to deworm twice a year  (spring and automn) ?

I agree with Doline first ensure they are free from worms using Flubenvet. Also check they are free from lice and that the coop is free from red mite. Its amazing how parasites can dramatically affect their general health.
