help - beginner questions
« on: September 05, 2006, 12:27 »
Hello

Firstly please excuse my ignorance in the following questions. I have only started gardening and I'm not sure what to do about a number of things.

1. My cabbage and brussels sprouts have been eaten to bits by something. I've sprayed with an organic bug control spray and that seems to have curtailed the problem but they have been badly damaged. Should I just dig them up or will they recover. The cabbage have formed (holey) heads and the sprouts have begum to appear?

2. My garlic leaves are about 9 inches high and have flopped. Not sure why they might have been over dry but no amount of watering has restored them - I know that the garlic is ready to harvest when the shoots have died back. Is this part of this process??

Thanks again for your help (in advance)

good luck with your own gardening

Hallo and welcome Mikey Joe
how long's your garlic been in the ground? - if its since early spring this year or earlier it is probably ready for harvesting - why not dig one up and see what it looks like?

re cabbages sounds like snails might be enjoying a meal or two - check around the base of the outer leaves in case that's where they're lurking.

re brussels sprouts if they are sturdy plants but for the onslaught I would leave them and see if they make a recovery - it could be that these have been munched on by caterpillars.
hope this helps and good luck with your gardening hobby.

Ref Garlic. I planted mine in February and when the stalks started to wilt I thought it was too early. They had formed bulbs, but weren't all that big. Am planting earlier this year (any time now).
My cabbages and caulis were devastated by caterpillars, then when I opened up my cabbages last night I found slugs as well. The heads of my sprouts have been shredded, but the sprouts themselves seem to be developing OK, so I'm leaving them.

Thanks for the advice folks.

I'll check the cabbages and garlic and leave the sprouts.

Nice view mellowmick. I know it well as I'm in B. Ferry

good luck everyone

You should post a photo of the dolphins in the river, captioned 'view from my garden'. See http://www.mvstay.org/html/river_tay_dolphin_trips__broug.html

We don't have dolphins, just blind eels.

I won't post a picture.

True mellowmick.

I'm a kayaker and have been kayaking with the dolphins a number of evenings. Brilliant experience!!

If I could only get my veg to be as well behaved!
