Hi,

Hopefully someone can help...

I went out to the shed today and got out my Mountfield M1 rotovator, put some fuel in it and tried to start it.

The pull cord came out a little stiff and squeaky but it started however the pul cord would not retract.  I stopped the engine, sprayed where the pull cord is (on top of the engine), left it for a few moments and started it again.  It started, the pull cord went in almost all the way but was very loose.

I left it running for about 10 mins to warm up and then stopped it.  Left it for about 5 mins and then pulled the cord again... it only came 1/2 way out and will not come on further or go back in.

What is wrong?

I am not very good with stuff like this.  I just expect it to work.

It's not too serious!
I expect a bad case of rust and lack of oil.
the engine cowling is held on by three 10mm bolts. undo these, only, and pull the cowling off. chances are as you do it the rope will retract. once you've got it off, spray oil into the centre of the recoil pulley, and move the cowling around to distirbute the oil onto the spring behind the pulley.
You my have a sqaure looking projection on the engine, which lines up with the centre of the recoil pulley. if you have, there will be a tiny hole in the top of it, which you can spray oil into. give the square bit a turn with your hand, it should rotate very easy in one direction, but not in the other(without turning the engine over).
reassemble, and all should be ok.
If you find that the rope won't retract when you pull the cowling off, get back in touch BEFORE doing anything else., as there is a spring under tension behind the pulley, and you risk injury if you take it apart without knowing what to expect.......

Gwiz you really are a gwizzz!

I FIXED IT (I HOPE)

It wasn't rusty at all.  The cord had tangled up in the mechanism, that is why it was hanging out and not retracting :!:

i gave everything a good oil none of the less and it all seems to be going good.

Just need some good weather now!

I love it when a plan comes together!
Happy to help, that's why they keep me hung up on a nail on the back of the equipment shed door.....

Hi,

Next question then.......

I have a petrol strimmer and there is no spark what so ever :-(

What is wrong with that?

Everything of mine seems to be broken or near breaking

Thanks

what make?
I would always go for the easiest fix first.
More often than not, I've found that there will be a faulty switch, or a dead short through one of the wires onto the metal casing. This sometimes happens because of vibration, or sometimes, because the machine is very dirty......
Also, the spark plug on a two stroke machine can wear out very quick.
Have you tried a new plug?
do that first, it'll cost you about £3 for a new one.
On most of these machines, there will be a wire that comes out of the coil, up to the cut out switch, and then down to an earth point. Inspect the wires, and look for obvious damage first, before undoing any screws....
