Hello, I have just been browsing the forums and came across square foot gardening and think i'll give it a go in my allotment, but am unclear about the boxes. Do they have a base to them? If so, what are they build from? Do they have drainage? Is 8" (from website) deep enough for anything? Is SFG really the way to go?

SFG is more ideal to those with limited space, if you have a lottie I wouldn't bother, when I read about it before, the yield is minimal, not for feeding a family throughout the year.

If its your soil your worried about, how about a few decent sized raised beds for say roots and salad crops?

Yes I think SA's right. The square foot idea was only for small spaces like little back gardens. Raised beds would be a better bet. Lots of info elsewhere about RBs.

One point that few people notice about SFG is that the boxes are filled with potting mix, not soil, and the boxes can get pricey from that alone. Mix would also mean more frequent watering...essentially, very high maintenance.

As the others say, it's more for people with very limited space. If you have a plot, raised beds are a better alternative, especially if you're on lower land that swamps easily or doesn't drain well, or heavier clay. Some people find it easier to not have to bend over so far.
