it did look well halfway to shearing, from memory there are two sorts of key, one has a notch and the other doesn't (but you can make your own fairly easily - I did - it needs to be a tight fit or the slack will allow it to be sheared easier) they should be available from ebay.

Hi Grendel i'd love to make my own but don't have the equipment! I was pretty gutted about it shearing given that i was hoping for a nice chug chug sound from the roto...

I've been looking online for a while now but no luck so far. Unsure on the product number for it, but i've checked all listings i can find and have ruled out anything with a notch on it, then ruled out the rest due to the stated dimensions.

This one appears to be 18mm long, 3mm wide, 4mm deep. It's steel isn't it?

Fancy knocking one up for me Grendel? More than happy to send you some cash for it and an SAE for return...?  ::)

Edit: actually i'd say it's more like 4.5mm deep. Hey if i did tweak your interest with my offer i'd just say that if you did agree, i would accept whatever you sent me, whether it works or not given that you've done this before and I'm sure would do ya best.

I'm sorry Oli, but I dont have access to my workshop at the moment, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flywheel-Key-Fits-Many-TECUMSEH-Engine-PRISMA-VANTAGE-/391115416531?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5b104ba3d3
these could be what you want, maybe worth messaging the seller with the approximate size you need and engine.

Ah no worries I felt a bit cheeky asking to honest but I'd love too see this old gal working 😄

Yea I saw that key you linked but it's got a slight groove poking up on it and this one doesn't. I think you're right though- just ask the vendors if it's unclear on their pages.
Trouble is when you rule out one part number bang go half the adverts out there!

But you gotta expect that with a 20 year + old roto...

Thanks Grendel! Thanks for your help also...invaluable.

You may have opened up pandora's box though - i've got an old chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and ride on mower to go now :-). Nothing quite as old as the roto you'll be pleased to hear, but the ride on mower isn't that far off....!
