Title: Cable ties to support tomato plants
Post by: wbmkk on June 12, 2022, 21:00
Has anybody got an internet link to where I can buy cable ties to support tomato plants please ?

I used ties a couple of years ago and it's so much easier than worrying about tying the plant stems to canes, using string, which is what I did last year.

I think i used 200nn cable ties previously and they were about 4mm wide

thanks !

screwfix are resonable price if you really want to use cable ties it might be worth getting the type that can be released and reused a bit dearer but you only buy once [ i use cut lengths of thick nylon type rope melted at the ends over a candle to seal  stops fraying reusing for years] good luck .

Good morning wbmkk,
personally I would not use cable ties/zip locks as there is no 'give' in them.  Far better to use plastic coated wire (about 18swg), you can loop the wire round the stem & stick don't twist just a loop and this will give as the stem grows in circumference.

Cheers,  Tony.

I keep my laddered tights and cut them into strips.  They make a nice firm tie, but with some give and softness to them.  If you cut off the foot separately you can slip these over your ripening corn cobs to keep away the mice and birds.  Now, I know that the menfolk amongst us won't have any old tights, but a word of warning - before you all raid your wife's/partner's undie drawer I would check first that you're not using her best tights or stockings. I won't be answerable for the consequences if you don't.

I picked up some neat rubber coated wire from the supermarket this year. Cut to length they're perfect for holding tom plants and can be slightly untwisted as the stem grows. At the end of the year I'll chuck them in a tub, ready for next years plants.

Both daughter and I are 'string twisters' here, and we can use the same string for several years...!

Tight? Us?
