Black rock
« on: February 10, 2021, 13:23 »
Hello,
I am looking to buy a POL when it's possible. The one I fancy,  to join our Calder Ranger, is a Rhode Rock.  I have a couple of questions that I hope someone here can answer please.
1. Are all Black Rock a cross between Rhode Island and Plymouth Rock?
2. If not. Are they just as hardy and look the same?
3. Are they med. In size? I don't want a large hen.
Thank you.
El.

If a seller is describing the hens as Black Rock, they should be the cross you mention.  That is the accepted norm for this hybrid.  They come in at around 2kg in weight, so an average size for a hybrid.

If you are picking the bird up, ask if you can have look at the rearing pens.  You should expect things to be a bit more crowded that you would ideally have at home, but everyone should be active and alert.  It might not be spotless, but any sign of filth or neglect, then walk away.

If a hen comes from a good breeder, she should be sound and hardy  :)

Thank you for that New shoot.
The breeder describes them as Rocks. So I'll have to ask her about that.
I've had hens from her before and have been allowed to choose the ones I like from a mixed group. So I've seen that where they're kept is well ventilated and well kept. No problems there.
