10 weeks in, when can I furtle?
« on: May 04, 2012, 20:22 »

Spuds have been in the 'poly for 10 weeks now, (Wrote it on calendar this year  :D )

And, they're up to about 8 inches now.

But I can't remember how long it is before I can 'have a feel'?      ::)

Can someone remind me??

What type and variety are they? About three weeks after flowering, but probably not before 12 weeks for an early, going through 16 for 2nd to 20 for a main, but I don't expect you have mains in there..

They're first early Maris Piper, so you're saying not to have a look for another (minimum of..) 2 weeks at least?

You can furtle as soon as the impulse gets overwhelming as long as you're very gentle and still love them in the morning. ;)  As to what you will find at this stage it's anyone's guess. :)

I've got Rocket planted in my tunnel. They're huge and showing flowers, but when I had a furtle I couldn't find any sign yet other than a single tiny little embryonic spud. Mine were planted 11 weeks ago, so I was kind of hoping there'd be something by this time.

Maris Piper are maincrop.

If that's what you've got, you'll have to wait a long time to furtle!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Not a lot.

If you Google "Wilko Maris", it'll return Piper & Peer, but not Bard.

I had another furtle today and I was obviously furtling in the wrong place on my first attempt, because this time I pulled out 1lb of beautiful clean white spuds :)

I'm really regretting planting them directly into the bed though. I put the raised beds down on top of a piece of rough ground and I've got a horrible feeling they've stretched their roots down right past the bed and into the rough ground, I'm going to have a bear of a job getting them all out. I really wish now I'd used polypots on top.
