strawberries in pots - vine weevil problem
« on: March 30, 2008, 21:56 »
repotted some strawberry plants into a new pot today and noticed what i have since discovered are vine weevil larvae in amongst the roots and compost.

been reading up about theese bugs and wonder what would be the best approach to keep strawberries in pots with this pest in mind.

would plain garden earth be better than peat based compost? or maybe john innes loam compost ?

im planning on washing out the roots of the strawberry plants and re potting, but what would be best to use?

i could try using the nemasys, but for only a few plants (12 atm) it does seem a bit expensive and a bit overkill for my needs

thanks for your advice

Had the same problem myself earlier this year I think it's probably still a little early for the nematodes to work properly, I just shook off as much soil from the root ball as I could and then as you suggested wash the roots to get rid of any remaining grubs, the upside was that the hens had a free feast and I think I might have got rid of them all  :D  took an hour or two tho'.

is there any way you could plant them in open ground, this pest seems to thrive on pot culture, they don't need much space. :)
