Cucumbers
« on: March 17, 2016, 14:09 »
Hi All

I'm thinking ahead so not planning to sow cucumbers just yet, but i'm interested in knowing what it is that's likely to make a cumumber bitter.

Is it erratic watering regime? Variety? Planting position? Variations/extremes in temperature during fruit setting period? Or something else entirely.....

In appreciation
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

IMHO Variety.

I always do Pasandra and Femspot.  Not had a bitter one yet.

No bitter ones here with La Diva- but they're in the greenhouse.

I've only had bitter ones on old style ridge varieties grown outdoors, particularly if you leave them too long before picking.

Pollination causes bitterness in Cucumbers you should grow female varieties which are "never" bitter
Do you really need al that lettuce/

Ridge cucumbers have to be pollinated for the cucumber to swell - so pollination per se is not the cause of bitterness.

Thanks for your responses.

I have seeds for early Fortune (Real Seeds); Gergana (Real Seeds); Poona Kheera (Real Seeds) & Jogger F1. Anyone with experience with any/either of these varieties being bitter?

T&M say about Jogger

Quote
When growing cucumbers, harvest regularly to encourage, long continuous production. Pick the fruits whilst young and tender before they show signs of producing seeds, as older fruits can become bitter.

Pollination of indoor cucumbers does make them bitter, but as MOS's quote, old ones get bitter too.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

I grow Poona Kheera and it can get pretty mature before it gets bitter.  Mine escaped into the squash patch last year so some were a tad on the large side before they were discovered  ::)  It wasn't a great year for cukes and the 2 plants I had outside produced loads of fruit.  It is a nice crispy textured cuke with good flavour  :)

If your cucumbers do get pollinated (either type) the bottom end of the fruit will likely begin to swell more than the top. If you remove the bottom swollen portion the top can still be used.

Unscrupulous growers would cut pollinated cucumbers as above and sell them as half cucumbers. If you are buying half cucumbers in a shop then only buy the stem end.
