I punch holes in the bottom of mine & use as plant pots - the lid is the right size for a plant saucer.  Also, I have a couple I use for feeding my orchids, african violets, cyclamen etc.  Sit the plant pot in the tub, pour in the feed/water, leave to soak for 15 mins, then remove plant pot and drain.

My kids keep crayons etc in some,I've got cotton reels and other sewing odds in others, the list is endless. Out in the shed, they have nails, screws etc in,and the tubs themselves are screwed to battening behind so they don't fall. I also keep Vanish tubs for bits n bobs. But my favourite item (almost completely unrelated but right now I'm chuffed to pieces) is an old mug with an integral frog inside it that I store my crochet hooks in ::)
My chickens probably make more sense than I do so forgive me ;-)
