Raspberry canes!
« on: March 23, 2010, 19:02 »
Ive just recieved my new raspberry canes today ! Glen ample - and ample they were, i got six instead of five - bargain!

i put them in our new bed at the end of the garden but as ever is the case im not sure if i've done right. We only have a small amount of space and the books ( and suppliers) all say 6 feet between rows. In our reality in our garden its just under 2 feet. I think i managed the 18 inches the suppliers recommended. Will this impede their growth? What will happen!

Help!

I was given some rasberry canes last year and stuck them in in less space than recommended. They thrived and I had a great crop.

I don't think it will impede thier growth:  it just means that you'll have a bit of squeeze when picking them.  You can always thin them out in the future, if you have more space somewhere.   :)

I'm no expert but I think they'll be OK. The only problem you may have is getting at all of the fruit easily. I have a feeling that the 6' between rows is to allow you to get in there and pick fruit either side of you. I think you'll end up with a solid block of bushes but never mind. You can always split/move or thin them in future years.

oops - just finished writing this and I see tode beat me to it.

My canes are less than two ft apart and they produce in abundance, only two rows so the picking isn't a problem as I can get to the fruit from both sides
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)
