Title: Fingers itching?
Post by: New shoot on February 04, 2018, 15:54
Gawd help me, I now have 2 lots of onions on the go from separate sowings.  I also have 2 types of early cabbage germinating, sweet peas chitting on damp kitchen paper, plus peppers and aubergines in a propagator.   I am of course blameless and was led astray by you lot - you know who you are

Well OK I started the onions from seed thread, but the rest is just not my fault in any way  :nowink:   Today itchy fingers were made better by sowing mangetout peas for an early crop in the greenhouse.

OH has noticed the gathering of pots, modules and tin foil reflectors and has started rolling his eyes a bit.  He knows better than to actually say anything

I have assuaged the itch somewhat, now that we have the big polytunnel as there are lots of things that will be being planted in the beds in there soon.

So for undercover growing Kent Blue & Indian Golden Mangetout; Hatif d'Anonnay Peas and a successive crop of Hurst Green Shaft Peas; various beetroot to plant in small clumps; Little Gem Lettuce;  direct-sow Cherry Belle Radishes.

For outside, once hardened off in the giant coldframe: Wizard Beans & Red Epicure Broad Beans; Spring Onions LIlia & White Lisbon

From the propagator and now in the heated greenhouse: Sweet peppers, Chillies & Aubergines
and Sweet Peas too

Moving on to early brassicas,  and carrots in the PT to keep my fingers happy

But we do live in a relatively mild area though

PS Sorry, forgot the Globo Onions and early Lincoln Leeks

Fingers can stop itching when it's snowing as it is here  :nowink: ;)

Us in Northumberland know not to get ahead of ourselves.

Some snowdrops in the green arrived today.  My postie always hands over packages labelled live plants with a smile, because he knows he will get a beaming smile back as I jump around with excitement

They are potted up in groups in a 50/50 JI/mp compost mix and are in the greenhouse, just because I don't want the pots freezing solid while they are recovering.  I have some in the garden, but want some more clumps to dot around.

That dealt with the itching today.  Amazing how a furtle around mixing up compost will do that

Is"furtle" a southern word? To me, a Cumbrian, it sounds somehow unsavoury. Like it means doing something furtively or underhandedly

Not peculiarly southern
Quote
Wiktionary: furtle. n. (label en chiefly UK) A cursory examination of the contents or details of something. vb. (label en chiefly UK intransitive) To gently delve; to probe or rummage tentatively.

Black country dialect uses firkle in the same way.

Blame DD.  He coined it as what we all do as we check under potato plants for those first few tubers.  It fits the bill exactly and has become an adopted word on the forum   It just seems to lend itself to other things though, like potting up snowdrop plants and finding you have extra bonus tiddlers with the plants you ordered   :D

It sounds more appropriate for a cat-burglar or pick-pocket to use

Only in your mind and no one else's, it seems!

Yes, it has caused many a laugh over the years - one of the first furtle threads here
Come on own up - how many have had a furtle? in Grow Your Own - Page 1 of 6 (http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=38149.msg454088#msg454088)

Here is a link to the English dictionary where the meaning of  furtle is described, so I don’t think DD was wholly responsible unless he’s older than we all think lol😂

Certainly a word I’m familiar with from South Yorkshire

Well, I had a good furtle in my Collins 21st Century Dictionary, a huge 1800 page tome and ii's not listed in there

Well yesterdays furtle finger occupying activity was a seed sort out and a proper sowing list.  My notebook was full of crossings out and additions, so time to start fresh and get some order restored.

I've even left room for adding little notes where I see something on here and think 'ooh - good idea' .  I know myself too well to think that I'll be sticking rigidly to my list  ;)

What could be better than a spud-bag furtle after the ten weeks in purdah?

Trouble is that the bigguns are going to be at the bottom of the bag, so it's an arm-furtle, very careful-like so not to disturb the younguns at the top...

But the joy of a dozen furtled spuds, nesting in a warm greenhouse, and then in a bowl for the kitchen describes the whole episode of early summer growing!
