lovely Scarlett put to sleep
« on: February 15, 2010, 14:56 »
Hi all
This morning I had my lovely 2 1/2 year hybrid Scarlett put to sleep .She had been really of colour for a few days and today she collapsed and had blood coming from her mouth .Just before this happened I had given her bum a little bit of a clean as  she is always prone to having a dirty bum.
The vet said that she had a mass in her abdomen .
I have brought her home to lay her to rest and she looks so perfect it is heart breaking.
Do you think that the vet was too quick to put her to sleep or should she have had antibiotics and given a chance? I feel so sad and that I have let her down. :(

How heartbreaking for you  :(.
I think the vet was probably right to do this, the trouble is with chickens like most wild animals is that they try to hide any sign of illness and ofen when we notice anything it can be too late. You did the best thing for her by taking this course of action even if it may not feel like it at the moment. Huge hugs from me xxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

i would agree with joy, from experience, when you see illness in a chuck, then they are really ill, and unless you have antibiotics in the fridge to give them straight away, it is a trip to the vet, however that can take time. you have my sympathies, but at least yours have lasted over 2 years.

So so sorry. The vet did the right thing, and so did you by taking her there. You obviously knew there was something wrong and took action. This just proves what a good poultry keeper you are.
Think of everything you gave her and the good life she had

you really did do the best thing for her, it's hard to make a decision like that, i had to do the same with Tinsle and i did wonder afterwards if i had given her a fair chance  :(
but had you not put her to sleep she would have suffered, she did sound very poorly, you did the right and most caring thing for her.

So sorry to hear about poor Scarlett  :(  It was very serious though if she'd actually collapsed with blood coming from her mouth so I don't think there was anything that could be done by that stage  :(

We all question whether or not we have done the right thing or acted too quickly when we have an animal put to sleep but I know you did the right thing, anyway the vet would have suggested waiting if they thought otherwise. You know in your heart of hearts that what you did was the best thing for Scarlett. I'm sure you gave her a wonderful life as well. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
