I have just got some cuttings ,but the bed is not ready ! Can I just pot them up for now ?

I potted mine up (thinking they needed mollycoddling - they don't, but potting them up was fine)

Presume they are Root cuttings, rather than leaves?

they're tough cookies, seem to grow anywhere.

i grow mine in 20l tubs now, i tried them in the ground but with in a few months they started to spread and i was concerned about them becoming a problem (especially if i wanted to use the bed later, which i now have).

mine seem quite happy in tubs as long as you keep on top of the watering, so can't see why they shouldn't be ok to start in pots.

I wonder if they will be as rich in Potash?  (My understanding was that it was their deep taproot that pulled up the Potash from the subsoil).

I tbought part of the point of comfrey was the tap root into the ground thing so they are pulling up nutrients. So putting them in a spare corner where nothing else is likely to be put, or by the compost bin to pull up nutrients lost from the compost might make them a bit more full of the good stuff.

They are going in a patch that is not much use for most things,as its shaded. If it spreads there its no problem .

Mine hasn't spread, as such. Its just sort of "bulked up" - like a body builder would!

The non-sterile one I grew from seed, before I knew about Bocking-14, was a nightmare! self seeding everywhere.

Used the wrong word I think, I meant grow and bulk up rathe than spread like self seeding. Comfrey self seeding would be a pain!

I'd assumed that was what you meant, thus it is me that is confusing things, sorry about that

On our allotment site we have some spare land and planted self seeding teays ago, its wonderful stuff any body can go get it when they want

I bought bocking 14 root cuttings a while back and have them in modules in a cold greenhouse, I paid for 12 but was sent 14 and to date 11 have come through, I have 3 fruit trees in the garden and each will get around 3 plants for chop and drop and comfrey tea, they will not be touched this year so they can build up some strength for next year, cheers Dave
