Marigolds
« on: April 27, 2012, 19:38 »
For some reason my marigold seed won't germinate this year. I always save seed from the previous year and am usually swamped out with them and have hundreds to give away. Do seed lose their vigour, or could storage have been a problem. Never had this trouble in the past.

No. In a seed tray with good compost in the greenhouse.

Yes, they do seem to have poor gernination rates this year.
I usually sow one seed per tiny module with great success - this year about half the modules have remained empty, so I'll have to make another sowing  :(

we have grown marigolds from seed this year, usually just buy plugs and we have a 60/70% success rate so far. they didn't do anything in the greenhouse so we brought them indoors into a south facing windowsill and they were up in no time, must be the cold weather >:(
If I plant them, will they grow?

Mine have been fab - I have hundreds!

I do think they are a seed that loses it's vigour.
I bought new seeds this year, but on previous years I have used old seed and new and the old seed was probably a bit hit or miss.

I sowed mine in a makeshift cold frame on the plot I have just pricked some out and potted on into 3inch pots . The rest are of carried sizes and some are just showing so the jury is still out to how successful I have been. But Iam just a beginner .

My French Marigolds are doing well MOS but can't remember how many I sowed per module...

Sowed mine French marigolds during that hot spell we had think about three weeks ago.  South facing conservatory and was amazed how quickly they came up three or four days, never known it too happen with my marigolds before. From what I can tell they all came up.  Mine were Suttons Jolly Japes and a one of each colour of durango.  They are about 4 to 5 inches high now.
