Scrags our smallest chook prolapsed yesterday :( its quite nasty looking very thin skin, poo and wee all mixed together.
We tried to ease it back in and cleaned the area last night, the same again this morning. However it just comes straight back out.
We are taking her to the vets this afternoon, she is a pet first and foremost. If they are useless (quite possible) then I will contact some of the long term chicken keepers I know for their views.
I feel stupidly unprepared, no antiseptic, no barrier cream, no vitamins or probiotics, no wormer even no cotton wool (all the things we had to hand when we had pet rabbits).
Shes currently in the spare room with the blinds drawn in the hope that she doesnt try to lay today.
Have any of you got experience of keeping a chook with a prolapse going? Wish us good luck :(

If the prolapse won't stay in I think your choices are fairly limited tbh. Unless the vet can do something, you might be looking at just letting her go :(

The vets thought it was guts related tissue rather than egg tissue. They wanted to remove some damaged skin and then put a stitch in top and bottom to hold everything in. They thought her chances were good because we had caught it early and she is only a year or so old. However I discussed with a rare breed poultry breeder I know and she didn't think she would ever make a full recovery given the prolapse reappeared instantly. We decided it was kindest in the long run to have her put to sleep, a very difficult decision to make when she seemed her usual alert self at the front end :(
