starting to grow soft fruit
« on: August 26, 2010, 11:41 »
I took over my allotment in Jan of this year and managed to hack back and dig the 3 year old jungle that had been allowed to develop. I managed to get about 2 thirds of the plot done and planted but the last 3rd beckons! My plan was to start to clear it to use at least some of it to grow fruit, rasberries, goosberries, blackcurrents. I have never grown any of these before - what are the key dates for buying and planting fruit bushes? I guess the key thing is -do I have until the spring to clear the last bit and get it ready to plant or should I be buying and planting stuff before the winter for a crop next year?

I would say don't skimp on the preparation - if it is going to take until spring to clear, then plant them then. If you can get it cleared before, say, beginning of October or as long as the soil is still warm enough for them to take root and establish somewhat before winter, then get some, or even just one or two bushes or canes.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I would order them fairly soon to be sure of getting exactly what you want.  When they arrive 'heal them in' (i.e. plant them somewhere temporarily) until their permanent homes are ready.

You will not get much of a crop off them in their first year.
