I bought a packet of asparagus seeds in the Wyevale great end of season seed sale, I've set aside a 6' x 4' raised bed ready for my huge crop. I know it will take 3 or so years to crop fully but has anybody out there got any tips or experience in growing asparagus from seed.

i raised some from ssed last year they are now in big pots as we are moving in a few months and i want to take them with me. i found them easy to grow i did them in the greenhouse.

Sorry dont know the answer to your question . Mine query is similar.
The little seed heads the grow on the asparagus when it has gone to seed, can you dry them and grow from them. I have some drying and the seeds look very healthy. Very black and shiny

At least you got them cheap, but If you'd seen this thread, you'd have got them free!


Free Asparagus Seed

The way I did it....

Early spring.
Use seed tray plant plug inserts.
One seed per cell.
When large enough transplant to 3" pots.
Grow on.
Plant out next spring.

I started mine off in the greenhouse & hardened them off to grow on outside.

Got 39 crowns from 40 seed sown.

RHS recommend spacing of 18" per plant and 18" per row, but staggering the plant as per this link....

We're looking at about 12 maximum at a sqeeze, (4 short rows of 3).

You could try, but bear in mind that spring is the natural time for them to germinate - this is the time of year the ferns start dying back.
