Carrots
« on: July 24, 2011, 20:21 »
This is my first season with my allotment and so far so good - had spuds, beetroot, cabbage, peas and a few more all of decent quality for a newbie.

However, my last carrot pickings had damage which looks very like the dreaded carrot fly. I've had them growing in a raised bed in the polytunnel and have been picking for a few weeks.

Anyway, I've pulled the lot out now and have kept what look like the good ones - see pic.

What i need to know is how to store them??

To store them, snap off all the greens, which draw out moisture as they sit about.
Then in a cool storage area, set a box with some peat moss in the bottom, line up the carrots, slightly spaced apart, one layer thick, top with more peat moss, add another layer of carrots, etc.

Be sure to use only perfect carrots, no dings, eaten bits, etc. They should last the better part of the winter.
