Planting Garlic .. some advice required please
« on: February 26, 2014, 19:09 »
I was in my local allotment shop this morning and saw they were selling garlic bulbs for 20p It seemed a bargain, so I got a few.

I asked if it was maybe too late to plant them, as they were very cheap but was told it was fine.

I assumed it would be pretty similar to onion sets,  with the bulbs 50% in and 50% out of the soil, so I stuck the first 24 in my last seed insert tray. I'll buy more tomorrow.

However, I have had a quick look on t'internet and see the cloves should be planted under ground. the garlic is formed there too.

Would I be wise to remove the garlic from the cells and perhaps plant them in larger pots or toilet roll inners, but buried under the soil.

My allotment soil is still far too wet to plant anything, perhaps with the exception of Basmati rice.

thanks

I planted some in a large pot of peat a few years ago. They were just peeping out of the surface, just like you plant onion sets. I did that just to give them a good start (in my non-heated but 'warmed by the sun' garden shed).

I later planted them out on the allotment at the normal depth. They did fine.

At 20P a go you've not not got a lot to lose have you really?  They'll most likely be ok.

As fatcat says, garlic needs to be buried at least 1 inch down. If the ground is wrong for planting, I tend to put them in 7cm pots just below the surface then, when I plant them in the ground, make sure they're well below the surface. This seems to work (although all my garlic is already in the ground).

Mine have lifted themselves up a bit because the modules are full of roots - I must get them in the ground soon.

When I do - I'll plant them deeper - sorted  ;)

Due to the wet weather try some sharp sand in the planting hole too.

Can't you just plant the cloves straight out without having to put them in pots / trays?

I have - some in November & some on Saturday. My plot isn't waterlogged though, which may be why some people are starting in pots

Yes - they prefer to be planted directly but if you are flooded etc. you cant do it direct so that is where the modules will be used to start them off.

My plot is still very wet. I am in the lowest allotment on a slightly sloping site.

I'm in the process of setting up raised beds, although they are not 100% finished yet
