You do need to register with 50 birds or more. You can voluntarily register with less if you want :)

Here is some info:

defra poultry register (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/vetsurveillance/poultry/)

Someone told me today that everyone with chickens has to register, new rules or something.

i don't think i want to register with Defra, i haven't forgotton when they were MAFF and came and killed all our sheep and lambs and my pet cow Elliemay, because the farmer next door (at least a mile away) got foot and mouth (ours didn't have the disease but were a dangerous contact) if he get's a notifiable bird disease, that's all my birds gone!

Would you get into serious trouble if you didnt register? also how would they find out if you had more than 50? do they send people round to check?

i was also told  to register with trading stanards ppl { sure it was them } because if there ever was a mass scare in bird flu or something then my birds would already be registed with all the nessacery ppl  then that way they could come an check the girls  out right away . another reason they like to know who keeps birds is so that they dont need to go checking on every single property as they will already know who has what and where  that to me makes sense .

Even if you don't register TMG, if there is an avian flu outbreak and they find out your in the danger zone, they'll find out you've got birds and kill them anyway.

We first registered on the GB poultry register when it was voluntary, but then they decided it was obligatory and you could get into trouble if you had more than 50 birds and didn't register!  But we were registered with DEFRA as a holding anyways.

It has it's uses too as they are supposed to let you know when these things happen in your area.

I can't even remember being 35!!!!   It was soooo long ago.  Pre-Brian anyway!!   :D :D

we are already registered with Defra and have a holding number, that's how they knew about Elliemay, i tried to hide her and refused to let them examine her, they brought the army in, big guys too, ok she's in there! we found out after we lost the appeal and after Ellie was dead that we would have won the appeal for Ellie only (not the sheep) if she hadn't been examined by an infected vet, they tricked us and it cost Elliemay her life! and i will never forget that.

No regard for individual animals by the sound of it. Terrible thing. :(
I can remember a lot of similar stories around the country.

Oh I'm sorry TMG, I didn't realise!

And no they don't take into account individual animals!!!

i asked if i could take the kid's off the farm before they started killing, they told me to leave my dog casper behind, i didn't, when i got to the gate we all had to be disenfected (even the car) the army man said "are you supposed to take the dog?" and i lied and said yes, they said it's alright if you spray him and he walks through the disenfectant" i was too scared to go to Copley in case they came after us and went to Darlington instead, i later found out that they'd borrowed Neal's sheep dog to round up some sheep (not his sheep, he was out of the zone, and not our sheep as they come when called, muppets) and afterwards they shot it and didn't tell him until he asked for it back, i still have nightmares about men in white coverall suits chasing me and trying to take my dog.

Thats awful  :(, it's like they don't care. I would be like you no one would take my dogs  >:(

i felt like that about my cow too, but you can't argue with the army, and actually they were alright, they didn't like it either, it was the vets who were horrible, shipped in from all over, we had a Australian one amongst ours, and the Scottish one i could have hit!

TMG after reading your story it just reinforces my idea that if you don't have to then don't. I was once told if you register then you become liable ( if thats the right word ) for your stock to be kept in a certain manner within DEFRA guidelines and if not ( and chances are in a back garden you can't)  liable for fines just like a commercial farmer  sod that for a game of soldiers I thought

OK  quick read through the thread.  If you have over 50 birds its miore than likely that some people are making a profit...   errr  Inland Revenue.

Secondly  whos to young to remember the Salmonela scare with Edwina?

Red tape and offialdom.

Everyones accountable.

Oh TMG how awful!!  :( that would of given me nightmares too!
I have registered even though i am still under 50 (just!) but i did notice that one of the questions asked If I could protect my birds from wild birds! i answered yes as i could cover the whole run if need be and maybe that would prevent my birds being culled if there was an outbreak of anything!!
briank its free to register!

Conspiracy theories.  It's free to register.  Do you sell your eggs?   Do you keep accounts as to how much you pay for upkeep of your chickens and record what you sell or even give away? . Are you third party insured in case of food poisoining?

If no to either the above  then registering will leave you open for investigation.

And yes  councils do go this far.  A counciller from the district council recently visitied an allotement site  near me to count chickens and cockerels.  Not just choockies  but cockerels that might be used to fertilise and then resell eggs or chicks.

The same counciller also visits local boot sales and takes a note off all car registrations that are selling.   Apparently they count the times the same car number plates are on boot sales to work out if they are "regular" traders or jus honest johns selling off their household dodo.

Not scare mongering.Just trying to show theres a bigger picture.

one of the questions asked If I could protect my birds from wild birds!

i can't protect my birds, with 30 acres to roam in and a lake in the field with Canada geese on it?
i don't make money from my birds, nor do i sell the eggs, i have been known to give them away when i have too many, not recently as the hens are either a) on strike or b) past it.

tmg that really sucks , i dont know if i could cope with anything  like that .
my farmer friend is litterally minutes walk from me an i was worried sick about him and his cows on the common land next to my house with the last foot an mouth outbreak. even though the place was blocked of etc u still had stupid pratts walking over there and most ppl didnt care .

i am not registering my girls and i aint about to be paying insurance or anyhting in case someone gets ill ,they take the risk with my eggs i dont force them to buy any .

not really, i live in no mans land, i do have a hidden away cow shed (they would never have found Ellie if i hadn't wimped and told them) but i could never get them all down there in a hurry, i think i'll just feign ignorance and hope Will the vet isn't reading this! :D
