Potatos too deep :(
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:36 »
Hi I planted my potatoes (three rows of second early and two rows of main) a spade depth deep about four weeks ago. I now realise this was too deep. Are they ever going to grow or have I doomed them?

I've heard worse! In any case with this weather, I wouldn't be in a busting rush for them to come through!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Planted ours same as you did. They are safer down there and will grow in their own time. I guess that its all about soil temperature, and the sub soil is still thawing out. Lots of nice warm April showers rain and warm sun baking the surface I hope will keep them happy.

I was talking to an old timer down our plot as he was sowing his spuds recently and I commented that he was sowing them deep. He says he always plants his spuds deep because it keeps the slugs away. So you may well have done yourself a favour.

I have always planted my spuds at a spades depth and have always had good crops, so don't worry. :D
