My hen's been attacked too
« on: November 06, 2010, 18:00 »
I'm glad to see from the other thread that Bella seems to be on the mend.

When I went to feed my chooks tonight, Skinny Leghorn was missing. I found her lying in the mud in the farmyard, with hardly any feathers left. The puppies must have attacked her. I was outside trying to get the pressure washer to work, and I can only assume it happened while I was busy with that.

Skinny Leghorn was so cold and wet, I had to give her a bath in warm water and dry her with a gentle hairdryer. She has a nasty wound on the back of her neck, which I sprayed with gentian violet. She was also jerking her neck, just as heather described in the other thread, and wasn't able to stand up. Poor Skinny Leghorn already had problems - she has a bad leg (the vet thinks it was probably broken before we got her and it healed badly), although she's very feisty and her gammy leg doesn't stop her getting about.

She's now wrapped in a towel inside a cat carrier in the dining room, with a hot water bottle underneath her. I managed to get her to drink a little water out of a pipette earlier and she seems to be sleeping now.

I suppose it's just a question of waiting now.  :(

Sounds quite a lot like a fox attack in terms of the wound to her neck. Were the puppies still about and looking guilty?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Poor Skinny Leghorn, maybe because she has a gamy leg she couldn't get away as quickly as the other. You sound as if you have done all you can for her to relive she shock she has experienced and possibly only time will tell. I hope she makes a swift recovery.

Thanks for replies.

I'm pretty sure it was the dogs - they've got form.

Skinny Leghorn is now "perching" in the cat carrier, under the stairs, which is an improvement, because when I brought her in, she couldn't stand up at all.

Fingers crossed!
