it can take hours - some seem to start then rest whilst others pip and then next minute you turn around and there they are.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I had one take less then 10 minutes and another over 24 hours - that's why I use a broody as otherwise I couldn't stand the waiting!

thats a bit of a relief then, my first one broke through with a small hole around an hour and half ago it was breaking bits of shell off and poking its beak out of the hole but for about the last half hour i havent seen it move, i guess it must be resting! their not actually due to hatch untill tomorrow! will it be ok if its not out before i go to bed? wont i need to put it in the brooder with the food and water?

I've had a couple take more than 24 hours from pip to hatch.

However I've had more than a few who pip then fail to hatch for whatever reason... though often it is because they have pipped in the wong place.

It is best to leave newly hatched chicks in the incubator for at least 24 hours to dry out. They have food for at least that amount of time. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Most of mine hatched out within the hour, although one unfortunately died just after hatching  :(. Have you tried listening to the egg; any sounds, cheeps, pecking noises? Does it still feel warm to the touch. Unfortunately it doesn't sound too good if there hasn't been any movement  :(. It may be for the best if it was very weak or ill. It's still very sad to think of one not making it though

the chick never made it out of the egg! i feel like i should have helped it but like Tazzy said if it couldnt make it out on its own it was probably not meant to be!  :( never mind i still have one! gona pick up some day olds in a couple of days if none of the others hatch so its not al alone! its jus bumbleing around on its own and falling over!

Do you have to alter/lowere the humidity in the incubator after they hatch if keeping them in it for 24hours. Ours was set at 65% for hatching and all hatched now. I'm not sure whether to leave it at hatching settings or to change them. Maggie
