Two horrid days.
« on: February 19, 2021, 12:33 »
I Know I need new kitchen vinyl.  The kitchen is U shaped.   Th bottom part of the U is just 4 ft whilst the sides are 8ft6" and 7ft.  I need new covering because on the bottom of the U the vinyl has developed a black line across it.  Also the 7ft of the shape is looking lumpy.        At the edge of the 4 ft.  the original wood floor meets the extension in the 7ft area which is concrete.  I have absolutely no idea what is causing it.
I have had a couple of men here, who I have mentally dismissed.  Today I have had the third.   He has cut out the vinyl across the bottom of the U.   It is very damp and the vinyl had gone mouldy under.   Now I have to wait 1 week to see if it dries out.   Maybe the 'fridge has a leak, maybe there are other pipes, maybe the damp is rising between the two types of flooring.
Also yesterday, I had a window man here as 1 very large and 1 smaller has blown where I sit here and look down the garden.  (He told me about the carpet man who has been today)
Also the transmitter broke down on the top of the Downs, so no TV all day.  I took my laptop into the sitting room, with extension leads etc, and got Iplayer for BBC,  but I cannot get ITV or freeview,  why is that ?
I went to bed about 11pm, got cosy with my book, and at 11.15pm   all the lights went in the village due to a power cut.
Today, I am now worrying about this damp.  Also I have had to reset microwave and cooker clocks.

I feel old, worn out and my brain aches.  Stress makes everything ache and my Ezema
, has come back and I am itching.

All trivial in the Countries problems, I hear you say, but when you live alone and trying to isolate, it is hard.
Surely my got times are round the corner  :D  Mrs Bouquet

MB, being stressed is only natural during these hard times, but when you live on your own the last thing you need is added pressure when life goes wrong. Sometimes in these situations our minds can make mountains out of mole hills then things turn out not to be as bad as we thought. Damp is a nuisance but can be caused by many things such as condensation or lack of air flow, especially in a small area in your kitchen like you mentioned because you've got the heat coming from cooking etc meeting a cold floor with a combination of wood and concrete. Best to get the all vinyl up and see what's what, perhaps just get a quote for the windows and get it seen to later on when you feel a bit more upbeat. Here's a pic of some daffs my OH bought me for Valentine's Day. I have two more vases full and they are so cheerful on a dismal day.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Can only get better.
Vinyl with black line/damp under is that on the wood floorboards? or concrete.
Do you know if the extension had waterproof sheet on it?
How much rain has there been and how big puddles near the house?
Do you have pipes through the concrete?
How old is the extension?
if watching bbc, you should be able to get itv online

Mrs B, they say that a trouble shared is a trouble halved, but when you are all alone I think any trouble seems to be multiplied tenfold.  I think that we're all a bit more fragile when it comes to dealing with problems because we've had such an awful twelve months.
Over the past month my cooker has failed, the washing machine has had to be replaced, my computer gave up the ghost, and last, but not least, my kitchen scales no longer work!  Unlike you, I'm not on my own, but I always have to sort out any problems myself, although having someone else in the house, even if they don't help, seems to make it bearable.
Just look after yourself while you are getting sorted. Have something nice to eat, relax a bit and try to get some decent sleep. Easy to say, I know, but I'm sure everything will be ok in the end, it just takes a little time.

I have had another flooring man here this morning, he has cut the vinyl out of the U shape, it is all wet on the concete floor and the vinyl going mouldy on the back.    I have taken the plunge, and called some damp and leak specialists.  They are coming on Monday.   £150 call out, and £99/hour (they have reduced for me to £75/hpur)  all plus the vat.  I suspect it is coming from either washing machine or 'fridge.   Anyway thats it, no no new sitting room carpet now.   have to get this kitchen sorted.
Quote arrived from window man,  £216 inc:      What this space after Monday,  these people know that we have no alternatives so can more or less charge what they want.  ::)  Mrs B

Many years ago I had to call out a "Gas Engineer" when a bird got trapped in the chimney behind our gas fire. My husband was out at work, and the poor bird was in an absolute panic.  I got an extortionate quote too, the call out charge, plus, I think it was £40 per hour after that.  Big burly man wearing leather jacket and looking like a night club bouncer duly arrived. He disconnected the fire and as he pulled it away he jumped up shrieking "It's a bird!!!!!".  It turned out he was terrified of birds and I had to rescue it myself and put it outside. He replaced the fire and then asked my for the call out fee plus payment for two hours' work   As it was only ten minutes into the second hour I queried this, but he insisted. I was furious so I said that if I was obliged to pay him for an extra hour's work, then he could earn it and service the gas fire in the dining room, and to be sure that he didn't go one minute over the hour because I wouldn't be paying him any more.  He meekly did as I asked, I paid him and he left.  My husband always tells people that I seem quiet - but never cross me because I have a hell of a temper, but only when justified.
Just be very careful of those charging "per hour", the work always seems to take just a few minutes more.

I'm sorry to here about your dilemma with damp and other things Mrs B  damp can be a real pain to sort and there are many things that  causing the damp and  although its costly for a professional damp specialist to call but  its worth it if he's worth his salt he should be able to tell you what the problem is straight away

we had a damp problem in our kitchen [black wall] we found that out when we fitted a new kitchen  we found  2 things that was causing the damp our next door neighbour had a new fence and the builder had fixed  the concreate post to our wall  also being next to a field and the house not having a damp course the wet was seeping through the wall from the field when it rained and more so in the winter

so I  rectified the problem by moving the fence post away from our wall and then dug out a trench near the wall in the field leaving a gap between the wall and the field problem solved

we then had another damp problem in our conservatory and it turned out the builder who concreted a path
near the conservatory got the levels wrong so instead of the water running away from the conservatory it was running into conservatory so I helped my builder friend not the idiot >:( who done path to put a drain in to take the water away problem solved i try to do most of our building work myself and we are lucky to have a very good builder friend who  has saved me many pounds

I hope you get the damp problem sorted Mrs B let us know how you get on i look at these situations like this there's always another day and things will get sorted one way or another

Late this afternoon, I emptied out the fridge.  It said if not working properly, there will be water under the veg holder.   No problems that I could see, but at least it has had a good clean  ::)  Tomorrow I am going to do some washing and keep an eye out.    Mrs B , Thank you all for the kind words and watch this space.

Today a Company of water leak specialists are here.   This is under instruction for M=my Household/buildings
Insurance.   I have paid the first £250 excess.    With out insurance todays visit will cost about £1,500.  He is just going now having told me the leaking pipe is under the concrete floor, where the mouldy vinyl has been.
Now he send his report to Insurers.  Insurers now send another company with CCTV who will inspect the pipe.
Possibly, it will be fixed with a "Stent" in it, but not by this Company, after their report, another company will fix the stent.   If that works,  then big de-humidifiers come in to dry everything out.  If it doesn't work, some of the concrete floor comes up.
All of the plinths have been off today, the machinery all run etc etc.   But at least I have thrown out some very unused saucepans and a new steamer, which I never use anyway  ::)
What a gay few months,     Mrs Bouquet.

Oh dear Mrs B, but at least it’s getting sorted before you had new flooring put down, will the insurers cover the cost of new flooring & installation too?

They may do because I have contents cover with them as well as building.  I shall just try to take each steps as it happens.  Not easy for me as I am terribly impatient.   Watch this space.     Mrs B

Update on my damp kitchen floor.  After weeks and weeks, I made an official complaint to my insurers.
They immediately appointed a Loss Adjuster.  He has been this morning.    Outcome,   "A patch" is being put in the under concrete gully which takes washing machine water.   This is a pipe inserted and stuck inside the old pipe.  Apparently the gully CCTV showed a problem, which they decided wasn't relevant !
The Adjuster now organises everything,  after the pipework is done and checked, he will organise a commercial de-humidifer, and when it is all dry,  I give him the price for new vinyl and fitting etc.  Apparently I also will get the funds from him to pay for that as well. :)  I expect this will take a few weeks,  but I am happier now I know somebody is looking after and co-ordinating it for me.   Watch this space  Mrs Bouquet
