Still no Butternut Squash
« on: August 19, 2009, 22:35 »
I've been waiting and watching my butternut squash very closely for female flowers gor ages but all i've had are male flowers, is it worth me continuing the waiting and watching, I'm begining to think its a waste of time.

Mine are about the same - growing like triffids but not even any mature flowers, let alone any I could identify as male/female. :(

I am sure I read somewhere on this forum that they do that, and you just have to be patient. Sometimes you are lucky and get some before winter, sometimes not. It is my first year growing though, so I can't confirm that personally, I'm afraid.

Mine has moved into the adjacent bed to have its squash - a bit of a squeeze amongst the Swiss Chard but it's definately forming a few.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Mine are only just forming too.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Up North in Derbyshire only just seen a flower and maybe a slight shape of one. Keep hoping. 8) There is plenty of time before the frost comes. I have put some glass over one of mine to warm it up abit. Hope that works.

tons and tons of buds on mine which are very slowly turning into flowers but no sign of any fruit yet. I was a little late planting this year though so not holding out much hope of getting any  ::)

I have a couple which are about 3" long.  There are also one or two just forming now so it isn't time to completely lose hope yet I don't think.

Mine have had flowers and have a few really really small squash(es?) growing now, although they're spreading everywhere and taking over. Will these get bigger with time? They seem to still be at the same size they were weeks ago - about the same size as a small plum!  :tongue2:

mine are the right size now, but are not ripe. Can't wait though as it's a great veg.

"Sunny" Kent must be Butter Nut growing heaven  :) I've got at least half a dozen on their way with more female flowers forming. And looking around our lottie site others also seem to be doing well both with Butter Nut and other squashes!

Same here with the BNs although the 'Sunshine' pumpkins only gave 1 fruit each, and then no more flowers :(

…but just to balance the Kent/ elsewhere argument: I have sandy soil that acts like a colander and swear my arms are a foot longer from all the watering this year - don’t even mention the word ‘brassica’. That’s the down side to hot weather around here.  :(

But us kentish lot are complaining that you've had all the rain this year  8)
Gardeners are never happy with the weather, someone will always complain, no matter what
Now where's that hosepipe as the bleeping rain stopped again after just 3 minutes:mad:
