Strawberry end of season
« on: September 11, 2019, 09:00 »
This is our first year on an allotment.

We had some new strawberry plants which didn't produce much but hopeful of more next year .

What do we do with them over the winter ? Do you cut them back or just leave them alone ? Do they have to be taken indooors or protected with fleece from frost ?

Also can they be moved ? Basically planted them where there was space but now I'm more organized I've got an area of like just for fruit .

Thanks in advance

Hello, hope you're enjoying your new allotment!

Strawberry yields are small the first year, years two and three are when they really kick off.

Remove any dead or red leaves and if you want to transplant them now is as good a time as any, theyre quite hardy. If they have produced any runners , peg the nodules into small soil filled pots set out on the ground around the plants and they will root in and produce the next generation. In year 4 the plants will start to wind down so its worth having new plants frim runners each year to replace them but remember these runners rob the plants of energy they could be putting into the fruits so only encourage as many as you'll need and clip the rest off.

As for fleecing, some people do, I dont. Never had any problems with them.

I cut mine down to three inches with garden shears, collect and burn/bin all leaves. If new plants are needed good advice has already been given about runners.
