2 years ago i bought a squash from asda, saved the seed, planted 5 last year and got about 50 squashes which makes the most delicious soup ever and also made us popular with our allotment neighbours who hadnt grown any! just right for this weather.
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

Very nice cut in half lengthways, a bit of olive oil on and some salt and pepper, then baked in the oven. Yummy! :D

Welcome to the forum, I'm having a go at butternuts this year for the first time, only cos this lot go on about them so much, I haven't even tasted one yet, so they'd better be good :)

Last spring I grew butternuts from supermarket squash seeds and they worked really well.  The one plant I kept was rampant but the continuous rain did for it in the end.
Cheese makes everything better.

I dont normally like marrows or pumpkins but butternuts are in a class of their own (in my humble opinion :oops: )

If they really are that good perhaps I'll give them a go. Soup would freeze well too.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I like to chuck half a roasted butternut in with the spinach and ricotta when making a cannelloni. Mash it up with some nutmeg, salt and pepper for the filling. Yum Yum Yum.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Thick slices sprinkled with brown sugar and fried in butter until caramelised, then simmered in the pan with orange juice/zest and a splash of cointreau. Great with roast duck.

I think agapanthus's pumpkin soup that she posted for the Fungal foray coud be adapted.

I haven't grown these before, but planning to put some in this year. How much space would one plant take up/spread?

They do take up quite a bit of space once they take off. i planted 5 across the plot and then they stretched out about 5 or 6 feet

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND RED LENTIL SOUP
Ingredients

Serves 5


1 medium onion, finely diced
1 red pepper, finely diced
1 carrot, finely diced
1 small butternut squash, cut into 2 inch chunks, that's been roasted for 20 mins in a hot oven
1 potato, chopped
500ml of vegetable stock
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper to taste
1 clove of garlic
half a cup of split red lentils
Method

Sweat all the vegetables in a good glug of olive oil and garlic until slightly translucent.

Add the stock, lentils and flavourings, and simmer for 30 mins.

Allow to cool, then puree in a food processor. Transfer back to the pan and reheat gently prior to serving
