Blackcurrants Planting and Pruning.
« on: June 12, 2013, 11:06 »
Hi,

I have bought three blackcurrant bushed from a garden centre this week.  They have quite large new shoots with leaves and some small berries growing from older woow.  Some are pretty good growth with lots of leaves. They are in pots.

I have read advice on planting them out to cut them back straight away as soon as they are planted to the first bud but wondered if this is appropriate in this situation?

Seems a shame to wait two years to get a crop when they are growing well now?

I plan to get them in the soil in the next couple of weeks.

I think that's the advice for bare rooted, dormant plants.  I would wait until the winter to prune them.

I'm sure they are fruiting well and wild plants don't get pruned

Pruning can achieve a number of things:

•   Bigger fruit
•   Easier picking
•   More regular harvests
•   Better looking bushes that don't bend to the ground or break under the weight of fruit.

It rarely increases yield or reduces pests and disease.
