Caterpillars on my broccoli - help!
« on: July 19, 2016, 18:56 »
I obviously didn't spot the eggs - but found the leaves swarming with caterpillars munching away. I've removed the leaves - still with the caterpillars on them (don't want to kill butterflies - I like butterflies) and put them in the woods behind my house - but is there a method of killing the rest of the eggs before they hatch?
I've sprayed everything with washing-up liquid in the meantime on what I think are the eggs, but to be honest I'm not even sure what caterpillar eggs look like!

The butterfly eggs on cabbage are either Large Whites, which lay a little group of yellow eggs, or Small Whites which lay single green eggs. Not so easy to spot. They can be squished easily or relocated if you think that is best

Thanks, Sunshineband - I'll see if I can find their eggs.
Should I have covered the bed with netting to prevent this?

Ideally yes, have a look round your allotment site for ideas of how to net, I use debris netting & this year have utilised a friend's old frame tent over the brassica bed,so far so good😊

Thanks, Snowdrops and mumofstig - those links to earlier threads are extremely helpful. I'll have to leave the page casually left open for my husband to see... he usually likes a challenge!  ;)

the only trouble with netting now is that any it is harder to keep an eye on and remove any eggs and caterpillars.

for the rest of the year it may be better to leave un netted and keep checking and picking of the pests.

if you net next year make sure the netting is tight enough and not gaps so they don't get through, they seem to be able to get through gaps a tenth their size.

Thanks, Allen,
I think I might have lost all my brassicas. Everything seems to be covered in whiteish/grey powdery stuff - looks like eggs or possibly some sort of aphid mixed up with the powdery stuff. I'll have to look again with my glasses on!
I don't know whether to dig up the lot and chuck it, so I'm hoping one of my knowledgeable friends will be able to take a look soon and give me some advice. :(

Thanks for those links, mumofstig. I'm pretty sure they're mealy aphids - I'll get something to treat them in the hope that I can save some of the plants.
