Onions - Falling over
« on: July 09, 2015, 12:29 »
Well hello all,

I've been growing onions from sets every year for about the last 5 years - and changing the beds they live in.
This year though, my onions are well on their way with tall healthy foiliage but have started to droop over a little bit.
They have bulbs on now but obviously not ready for havest yet.
Any ideas??
Oh - i have pulled one and cut open and all seems OK !!!
 ??? ??? ???
Keith

it may be that they are ready for lifting soon (just leave them for longer to be sure), or possibly recent heavy rain (?) may have temporarily affected the turgidity of the leaves - again, if all looked fine with the sacrificed bulb, just leave them for now  :)

Some of my summer onions are doing the same, almost as though they are thinking they should be ready to harvest.

Give the leaves a gentle tug just in case there could be something going on below the onion, I have had quite a few with white rot this year.

Probably run out of water and decided it is easiest to stop growing and get ripe.

Mine are doing the same thing and at the same state of bulb growth. I wasn't sure if it was due to some winds we've recently had here or the fact that the bed needed a good weeding. I've never had white rot so it is probably due to the weather. Also, I thought they looked like most would bolt but only a couple have done.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

They will be fine. It takes a while for the roots to die back, so you can dig them up when you return and then dry them off properly so the necks are fully dry.
