A bit of a boast
« on: September 15, 2009, 13:51 »
Hi Folks,

It was the highlight of the year last weekend with the local show.  I entered a large number of classes in the hope that I could win a prise or two.

I got 19 Firsts, 11 seconds, 10 Thirds, a very highly commended and a highly commended.
When the points were counted I had an amasing 88 points 51 points clear of second place.  Sadly I missed out on the two prizes that I desire - best collection of veg in the show and Best Chrysanthemum.

My pumpkin weighted in at over 25 kilos and my marrow at 3.5 kilos

So who else has been showing this year and what were your successes?

My biggest failures this year were my Onions and Shallots.
Enjoying the traditional ways and values of life.

Wow Pompey!  what do you feed them on?

I did win the class - best out of four very close entries.

I grew mine on the compost heap - an idea I found on this site I think.  Planted two plants and simply watered on a regular basis.  Six fruits have set, one got damaged by a fox, the others are all medium sized except for the show one.  The one that was damaged was on the same plant as my big one, so cutting down the number of fruits seems to work.  The two plants have invaided nearly a quarter of the smallest of my half plots (If that makes sense!)

I just dug a large mounded pit filled with manure/compost. Guttering pipe dug in for watering.

High potash feed once fruit had formed. Pinched a few off to begin with.

Grew 8 decent sized ones from 25lb to 78lb.

For large/giant ones you need a variety that grows large.

Gauntlet down for next year?

I got a 2nd for my courgettes, and a 3rd for my purple climbing beans in the "Any other veg" class!  (Which can only be because they were purple because they weren't that good.)  I only entered 4 veg classes I admit.

Best achievement show wise was to win best veg in show with a top tray exhibit.
1st place out of 300+ veg entries and I even got the NVS Medal. 8)

Biggest failure : Not managing to grow a 10 pound onion,only got to 9lb 1oz.. :tongue2:
