:? ok a few silly questions here ....while in supermarket i notied they had jars of pickling vinegar,can i stick my spring onions in it(to get pickled onions) and if so how long do i leave them in jar ?
 also when making a rhubarb pie ,do i cook the rhubarb first then put it in pie? ....my mother used to make it and i cant remember what she did !!

No, you can't really pickle spring onions. I suppose you could technically but you want silverskin onions for pickling.

I think you do cook the rhubarb first - check a recipe book :)

I've not cooked rhubarb pie but I don't cook my rhubarb for rhubarb crumble.

Oh yes you can.  You can pickle anything you like.  They won't look like the pickled onions you buy in the shops, because they'll be pickled spring onions.

I've pickled spring onions before, and as James said, they don't look like silverskin onions because they aren't, but they are still pickled onions!

I'm afraid I'm a bit lazy, and I also buy the pickling vinegar.  got some the other week in ASDA on special, only 58p a bottle!!!!!  but the next time I went in there, they'd sold out!! BAH Humbug!!!!  

I also partly because of laziness, partly because it seems a waste of money, but I don't pre salt my onions before pickling them.  I prepare them and put them straight in the vinegar!  OKay, they may not last as long, as they tend to start going soft after about 3 months,

My beetroot stays fine for a year!!!!
