Pekin with a poorly eye
« on: October 23, 2009, 14:32 »
Hi
I noticed today that one of my Pekins was not as active as usual, she was just sitting about with her eyes closed, on closer inspection she has one eye that looks bloodshot and the surrounding area is quite puffy.  I wondered if perhaps one of the other chickens and pecked her eye but not sure.  Does anyone have any advice for me?  Also should I bathe it with anything?

I have had this problem now and again, where a hen has been pecked in the eye, you could try bathing it with cold tea or salt water on cotton wool, seperate piece for each eye.

One of my new hens, 20 weeks old, has the same symptoms. Frank at Thornes has told me to use Optrex drops for a while to try to clear it up.
If it doesn't work might try the tea.
Been worried as she seems a bit down with it and is not a chirpy as our other two.
These are our first hens so new to all this!
