i know this is way off topic but does anyone know anything about welding as i need do to some on my old mini, i thing i have the basics but its the little bit that come from dooing the job i need also been told i would be better off buying a welder as the cost of getting someone to do it would work out the same and to hire on more than once would also be close to the price of a welder

I've moved this topic to the Equipment Shed Andy.

I think you need equipment for welding

how much welding do you need?

A good welder costs a few quid and unless your welding skills are good you need a good welder.  A £200 Jobie is hard to set up.

A mig for the car and if you are going outside one that can do gasless wire.
always have a target
and an objective.

Possably better to get it done by garage. Unless you want to do it your self. By the time you buy and practice with the welder the garage will have finnished the job for half the money, and the metal will glued well.

HI Andy,

My OH has started welding with a stick welder but it's taken him months to get to a stage where he's happy with the quality and look of his welds,  and really he's not 100% happy so given your level of experience it's probably better to take it to the garage as Frankie has said.

You need to take into account that if your weld isn't up to scratch that it will fail it's MOT so in this case I think you probably should just take it to the garage to have it done;  it will be less stress for you and if it's not right you can take it back to have it done again.

hope this helps!
Su

Snoozi's OH is a brave person to try stick welding. Gosh thats difficult but again spend a few quid on the rods (esbe) and life becomes a dream. You will already know, but I going to say it anyhow. Keep the sticks warm and dry. Also keep the mig rolls the same or buy small ones.

The trouble with gas is renting the bottles. You realy have to be using them all the time to justifie the rental. The baby disposable mig bottles are not much use either, so you need to rent a bottle for mig welding as well.  Again its expensive unless you use it all the time.
Stick welding is for heavy material.
So I reckon a gasless mig used out doors is the best option. The gasless wire gives off loads of smoke so you would have to ventilate well just to be able to see if you worked indoors.
