It is best to have the coop and run on one level.  Depending on the size of your hen you can use a rabbit hutch for a bantam.  For larger hens as long as they have enough room to stand up and move around a little in the sleeping area and an attached run the design is up to you.    ;)

Hi samuria, is this the first time you've hatched chicks? Have you thought about what you'll do with any cockerels that hatch? Don't forget to make sure you have enough room in the broody coop/ run for the chick crumbs and water. What and how many are you planning to hatch?

  Does that mean you have no plans if your hatch produces cockerels?

That is a good plan.  Most members shy away from the practical sides of things.  Poultry are often seen as pets and the mention of culling is distressing for them.  If you have never culled before there is plenty of advice and there are some courses which will give you the opportunity to have supervision to get it right.   :)

everyone's cup of tea.
the birds would be looked after well before.
i was taught by my father when we went shooting.
he said to treat the game with respect.

I had to dispatch 2 young cockerels on Sunday morning.  It is not something I look forward to but your father is right about respect.  They had a short and happy life and will not be wasted.  I have two other young cockerels that are the same age but not as mature or noisy (yet).  I have an old shed that I am planning to insulate against noise escaping.  If it works I will be able to keep a few cockerels.  They will be able to free range once the neighbours have had their beauty sleep.

What breed for poultry are you hoping to hatch?

Preparation is everything.  It makes it so much easier than doing things on impulse and then running round like a headless chicken when you have forgotten something important.
