Whitefly already
« on: March 18, 2010, 21:10 »
Down at the plot today i was checking on my only surviving psb and it appeared to be picking up a bit then I fondled the plant and load of white fly flew off it.
We've only just got rid of the snow and frost, do they know something we don't :)
I'll have to keep an eye on my cabbages.
Has anyone else spotted any yet?
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one! PSB as well! I've rootef them out now, but I wondered if they'd over wintered there!
Came across a couple of active ladybirds today as well! What does that tell us?

a few whitefly allways survive the winter in compost heaps etc  until the warmer weather,

and then the little * start breeding at 9-10 degrees

I am sure that the whitefly have found shelter in the PSB all Winter and not just come into the crop.

I was thinking they may have hibernated in amongst my leaves but surely not, it was an awfully cold winter.
Unless as peter says they were hiding in the compost heap and come out to play now the weathers warming up.
Whatever the reason I'm ready for them this year :)

I've had them all winter.  On Christmas day my house was full of them from the freshly picked sprouts!.  Even after the snow thawed there were one or two left on the plants.
