Title: blood on egg
Post by: dianemk73 on June 24, 2009, 18:21
I have noticed one if not two of my hens have laid eggs with blood on the shell. Is this anything to worry about?

Little dots? If so could be red mite. Otherwise don't know, but would suggest to check hens vents after they have laid.

Not dots, more like smears

Don't know how many hens you have, but see if you can spot who it is and check her vent.

Were they very big eggs or unusual shapes? Give us a bit more info to work on and one of the chook wonders on here will know the answer :D One of mine had some blood on an egg after she lay a 113g - was huge - checked and no prolapse of the vent so decided she must have ad "piles" pushing it out that had caused the blood  ::)

I have had it happen on a couple of occasions but the hen seemed fine.  It usually happened if she had a couple of days off then laid a biggish egg.  I guess I will know how they feel soon as my first baby is due in September
