rhubarb planted too deep?
« on: February 23, 2011, 10:55 »
I planted some rhubarb a good 3 weeks ago now was 6 in all, five had no stems and one did, the one with the stem is now a good 3 inches and another stem has joined it, but the other five are not coming through, I am starting to think I might have buried them to deep, between 2 and 3 inches.

So shall I dig them up and plant them just under the soil or do nothing?

They will probably be fine, rhubarb is pretty bombproof. Mine has resprouted mightily this year - it's about 8" high now. I mulched it with strawy manure in the autumn and it seems to like that.
I would fling a bit of slow-release fertiliser on it - blood, fish and bone or growmore and make sure it's getting plenty of rain.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

hi nemie,I believe the rule with rhubarb is not to plant too deep. Some of the guys on our site make sure the crown is above soil level, this makes sure the plant will not rot away in wet weather. Hope this is of some help.
people talk rubbish

If it really is only 2 > 3 inches down I would leave it alone.

There is always a danger at this time of year that if it is planted with  the growing tip just above surface level a frost could knock it for six, so you often see people piling more than 2 > 3 inches of cover over it anyway.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Ok I felt it was not right so went with that thought and have dug up two, there seems to be small amount of a white type mold on them, no stem shoots and very little root, could I plant these in a large pot and then replant when they have grown a few inches?

Sounds reasonable. But mould is not good, normally means the plant is not in good shape, so might just be one of those things (rather than having been planted too deep)

(I think they will suffer in future winters if they are too deep because dampness at the crowns tends to be something that a cold and/or wet Winter will exacerbate)

OK first of all thanks all for the information, now the embarrassing part , I planted them upside down after relooking on the internet I notice this mistake and have now replanted the 5 that were just dug up so now have 3 showing stems and two more coming through and one just well nothing might be a dud, as for the mold it was very light and I am not over worried about that.

Good luck with them now.

I might add one was a good 6 inch stem I am not quite sure where it was heading  :D but it is turned around and in day light now, this just proves what noshed said about them being bombproof.

Gardening is all about learning first how not to do it, then how to do it right.  :D

It seems that it`s un killable. Last year I was digging up some that had been planted under an apple tree and was struggling. one of the roots I got out was just a black soggy lump. When I squeezed it, water came out. I chucked it on the compost heap and forgot about it. This week I was moving the compost bins and out rolled the rhubarb root. It had dried out and had 7 new stalks sticking out all over it. It`s now gone into the new bed and looks fine. Never give up on your rhubarb! ;)
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.
